About Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) Program
The Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) Program is a comprehensive study that endeavors to identify the various factors that impact the health of older people and their prevalence. The study aims to provide the necessary insights for informed decision-making by healthcare professionals, policymakers, health program managers, and older people. Its overarching objective is to mitigate the risks associated with old age-related health issues, enhance the quality of life of older adults, and alleviate the financial burden on families and society.
The demographic shift towards an aging population has become a global phenomenon. The latest census figures indicate that approximately 6 million individuals, comprising 8% of the total population exceeding 75 million in 2010, are aged 60 years or more.
The aging process has a profound impact on individuals, both physically and psychologically, as well as socially and spiritually. Given the unique health care needs that arise during this period of life, it is imperative to address the challenges and disabilities that are commonly faced by the elderly. By implementing empowering programs tailored to their needs, we can help seniors to enhance their quality of life and improve their overall well-being.

This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the health status of men and women aged 60 years and over residing in Bushehr city. The study utilized a multistage, stratified cluster random sampling method to select participants in the BEH Programme. During the initial stage of the first phase, between March 2013 and October 2014, 3000 older individuals participated in the study, which accounted for 91.0% of those who were invited. According to the Bushehr District Health Centre, the estimated population of this age group was around 10,000. It is worth mentioning that Non-respondents were found among all strata, and there was no obvious pattern indicating selection bias.
